5 smart home innovations that are changing our lives

Smart home technology isn’t exactly a new concept; it is, in fact, more of a culmination of big dreams and years of research and development. Today, what once seemed like something out of a science fiction movie has transpired into one of the world’s fastest-growing industries that is expected to be worth $53.45 billion by 2022.

Since the idea of controlling our homes at the touch of a button became more of a reality, we’ve seen the development of security cameras that can warn our smartphones when motion is detected and buttons that ensure we never run out of our most-used products and groceries.

As technological innovations continue to change how we live our lives, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite smart products and concepts that could be set to become essentials of the home of the future.

Samsung Family Hub

Samsung is looking to keep our lives more connected than ever with their new Family Hub range. The company has given the age-old refrigerator the technological treatment to allow it to hold inventories, create shopping lists, share recipes, integrate family schedules and even stream our favourite music. If that wasn’t enough, three interior cameras also allow you to see inside your fridge from anywhere, anywhen.

Philips Hue

Philips has proven that some lightbulb moments really are just lightbulbs. Their personal wireless lighting system has been developed to customise to your daily routine – waking you up, welcoming you home and making it seem like you’re home when you’re not. The wide range of different lighting products can be synced with music, TVs and games for more immersive experiences.

June Oven

Described as “the world’s only intelligent convection oven”, the June Oven features carbon fibre heating elements to preheat three times faster, cook quicker and accurately maintain a uniform temperature. Presets allow you to select your preferences while the iOS app means you can control your oven from anywhere and be informed when your food is ready.

Rather than having to upgrade to a newer model every few years, cloud updates mean you can make sure you June Oven cooks with the latest technology all the time.

D-Link Wi-Fi Home Water Sensor

While not one of the more exciting entries on our list, the D-Link Wi-Fi Home Water Sensor could prove to be one of the most valuable. The device plugs into the wall and monitors your home, with audio and visual alerts allowing it to inform you of a leak whether you’re inside or out.

Stir Kinetic Desk

We arguably spend a lot more time in our offices than almost anywhere else; our desks are where problems are solved, ideas created and businesses built. Stir has taken office technology to a whole new level by developing a desk that responds to the human breath rate by gently raising and lowering itself to notify users of when to change positions. It’s easy enough to ignore if you’re in the zone, and the Kinetic Desk will even learn the times of day you prefer to keep sitting or standing.

Is it too far-fetched?

It can be difficult to picture a future where every day items begin to take control of our lives on our behalf, but it’s important to remember that just a few decades ago, very few of us would have imagined a world where we ordered our groceries on the internet or even that we’d be glued to something called a smartphone.

If history is anything to go by, it shows that just about everything can become reality if you give it time!
